Many states, especially those out west, such as California, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and others, adhere to what is known as the bridge law, which requires the axle to be positioned at or around the 41-inch mark.
When adjusting the tandems from the 41-inch mark toward the back, you make the tandems lighter and the tractor heavier. This adjustment operates on the principle of a seesaw, with the 41-inch mark acting as the pivot point. Remember, each time you move the axle, you should account for 250 lbs of weight adjustment.
Once a trailer sits for an extended period, it exhausts all the air from the trailer, including the airbags, brake chambers, and tanks. This means when you hook up to it, make sure to charge the system and let the truck blow off. Here’s how that works:
The first thing you’ll do is charge up the system. To do this, push in the red button, which applies air to the trailer and fills up the four airbags, four brake chambers, and two tanks. As you will be able to see, the gauges will go down, and you will need to fill them back up to 120 PSI. The axles will only slide when sufficient air pulls the pins apart.
Once the pressure builds up to 120 psi, you will hear the tractor blow off; this indicates that the compressor has shut off. Next, pull out the red button, which will release all the air but still maintain air in the chamber to release the valve. After pulling the button, go back to the trailer and pull the plunger; with air in it, it should release. If the truck is a bit heavy and the plunger doesn’t release, go back into the tractor and give it a gentle jiggle back and forth.
It only takes a little movement for the pins to pop out. Now, you can slide the axle either forward or backward to distribute the weight.
To move the axle, I’ve slid it backward, moving it from one position to another, which engages about four pins. In this situation, if you are distributing 1,000 lbs, you would count off four pins and mark them in the direction you want to move the bogeys, whether forward or back, so you can stop accurately and ensure proper weight distribution of the 1,000 lbs.
To effectively lock the axle in place after making necessary adjustments, simply push in the pin! This action is necessary for ensuring that the axle remains securely positioned. If you find that the pins aren’t coming out as expected, don’t worry—this can often be resolved by heading back into the truck and gently jiggling it forward or backward. This slight movement usually allows the pins to lock back into place as intended.
The process itself is quite simple and requires no excessive force. You don’t need to pull hard or soft; just a gentle motion is all that is needed to achieve the desired result. Once the axle is locked securely, it’s essential to count how many pins you have moved. This will aid you in understanding the adjustment made and is a good practice for accurate measurements.
While you’re making these adjustments, it’s a good opportunity to inspect the condition of the axles and tires. Ensure that they are in good shape and that the tires are properly inflated, as these factors can also affect weight distribution and overall towing performance.
After making this adjustment, it’s time to recheck the weight. Return to the scale to ensure everything is within acceptable limits. For example, let’s say that your tractor is initially overweight by 1,480 lbs. while the maximum weight allowed is 3,400 lbs. In this scenario, you can adjust the trailer axle by moving it six pins forward towards the truck. This particular adjustment is estimated to transfer approximately 500 lbs. from the tractor to the trailer.
